PROJECT:

USAID / PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS AND JOURNALISTS (PDP)

DURATION:

March 15, 2023 - March 14, 2026

DESCRIPTION:

Under a Management Systems International (MSI) subcontract, TDA is supporting the implementation of the USAID Project Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists (PDP) in Mexico.

TDA is providing international and local short-term technical assistance (STTA) in designing and executing trainings in witness and victim interviewing skills, with particular focuses on the trauma-informed interviewing of victims and on interviewing “hostile” witnesses (such as police officers or other authorities suspected or accused of wrongdoing against journalists and human rights defenders (HRDs)). Also, TDA is providing technical assistance in the preparation of manuals and guides, to facilitate the work of federal- and state-level specialized prosecutors as well as criminal judges working on crimes against the freedom of expression, journalists and HRDs.

Since the existence of crimes committed against those exercising their right to freedom of expression, while very prevalent in Mexico, is also an increasingly serious problem in many other countries in the rest of Latin American region. Therefore, TDA is assisting in the creation of an International Network of Justice Sector Professionals protecting the Freedom of Expression and the Human Rights’ Defense (Red Internacional de Profesionales de la Justicia protegiendo la Libertad de Expresión y la Defensa de Derechos Humanos, or REDI-LEDH).

PROJECT:

USAID / GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE PREVENTION AND RESPONSE PROJECT (GGBV)

DURATION:

January  18, 2024 – December 15, 2028

DESCRIPTION:

TDA is supporting the USAID project Gender Based Violence Prevention and Response Project (GGBV) in Guatemala under a subcontract from Chemonics Inc. Its goal is to reduce the negative social and economic impacts of gender-based violence (GBV) in targeted areas of Guatemala, contributing to longer-term stability of the country, aligned with United States national security objectives. The Project aims to support women, children, adolescents, and other vulnerable groups victims of gender-based violence and intrafamily violence.

TDA is providing leadership, coordination, and technical support to GGBV, which focuses efforts on strengthening the capacity of justice system institutions to respond to GBV and interfamily violence, including the Courts, Public Defense Institute, National Forensics Science Institute, National Civilian Police, among others.

TDA is enhancing the Government of Guatemala (GoG) institutions’ capacity to respond to the needs of GBV victims. The Subcontractor will further strengthen institutions that are committed to improve access to and decentralization of services for GBV victims, including governmental and nongovernmental institutions such as the Comprehensive Support Centers for women survivors of violence (CAIMUS). TDA is providing technical assistance and training to the targeted institutions to strengthen the process for attention to victims of gender-based violence with an inclusive, trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally appropriate approach. Therefore, innovative digital solutions are introduced, such as a geo-tagged application and an inter-phased data management system, to increase data quality, streamline coordination, and expand coverage and access to users.

PROJECT:

USAID / INDEPENDENT AND  EFFECTIVE JUSTICE ACTIVITY (IEJSA)

DESCRIPTION:

Under the USAID El Salvador Independent and Effective Justice Activity (IEJSA) project, TDA is primarily responsible for the technical leadership of the component for Prosecution and Adjudication of Serious Crimes Strengthened in Major Urban Areas. It is to ensure that the criminal justice system responds to the needs of the El Salvadoran citizens, addressing the most serious and common crimes in the country. Therefore, TDA is providing technical and managerial assistance in the execution.

Along with the Dexis team, TDA is helping to train and coach defenders on people-centered justice techniques, including how to engage, interact, interview, and inform clients. Together with the Dexis team we are also strengthening the PGR’s capacity to represent vulnerable clients who are accused of crimes, particularly those under El Salvador’s declared state of emergency from March 2022 to April 2024.
